Beckman Coulter, Inc based in Orange Country California., incorporated in 1988, is a manufacturer and marketer of biomedical testing instrument systems, tests and supplies. It operates in two segments: segments: Clinical Diagnostics and Life Science. The Company’s products are classified into two categories, including clinical diagnostics and life science research instruments and tools. The Company’s clinical diagnostics produce information physicians use to diagnose disease, make treatment decisions and monitor patients in hospitals and other critical care settings worldwide. In addition to meeting customer needs with high quality, state-of-the-art instrument systems, the company develops collaborative relationships to help customers to identify ways to maximize the efficiency of those systems in their processes. This is referred to as "The Power of Process."

On April 14, 2009, the Company acquired Cogenics, genomics division of Clinical Data Inc. On August 3, 2009, it acquired the diagnostics systems business from Olympus Corporation. In August 2009, the Company announced the creation of Beckman Coulter Genomics.

We believe in simplify, automate and innovate complex biomedical tests

From the past 75 years we have been serving both the diagnostics as well research industry in countless ways. Introduced in 1956, the Coulter Counter Model A was the first commercial instrument to demonstrate the "Coulter Principle" — the most widely used method in the world for counting and sizing microscopic cells and particles. The second generation of the Coulter Counter, the Model B, offered improved size analysis of materials such as minerals, fibers, cellulose, abrasives, chemicals, metal powders, pigments, propellants, soils and foodstuffs. From electrodes to counters to chromatographs to analysers we have been one of the leading companies serving mankind. More than 12,000 employees, 200,000 Beckman Coulter systems operate in laboratories around the world, supplying critical information for improving patient health and reducing the cost of care. Recurring revenue, consisting of consumable supplies (including reagent test kits), service and operating-type lease payments, represent about 80 percent of the company's 2009 revenue of close to 4 billion

In the Patient Care testing market, Beckman Coulter customers are hospital laboratories, commercial laboratories, physicians' offices and group practices. These customer groups are supported with laboratory automation systems, clinical chemistry systems, blood cell analysis systems, immunochemistry systems, centrifuges, rapid-test kits, reagents and quality control chemistries.

In the R&D Testing and Translational Solutions markets, Beckman Coulter customers include biotechnology firms, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions and universities. The efficiency and productivity of these researchers is greatly enhanced by Beckman Coulter centrifuges and rotors, capillary electrophoresis systems, protein purification systems, DNA synthesizers and sequencers, biorobotics workstations, flow cytometry systems, high-performance liquid chromatographs, scintillation systems, spectrophotometers, particle analysis systems, laboratory automation systems and software.

We aim at making your lab management more efficient and cost effective.

Product Profile

Clinical Diagnostics

Routine chemistry systems use electrochemical detection and chemical reactions with patient samples to detect and quantify substances of diagnostic interest (analytes) in blood, urine and other body fluids. The Company offers tests for more than 100 individual analytes, which account for hospital-based clinical chemistry testing. It offers systems and workflow solutions for a range of customers, including hospitals and reference laboratories. The Olympus products include chemistry systems, along with pre-analytical automation systems. Its primary autochemistry clinical chemistry systems include AU5400, the Company’s analyzer with the capacity to hold up to 96 different reagents; AU2700, designed for labs with the capacity to hold up to 96 different reagents on board; UniCel DxC 800, designed for laboratories with the capacity to hold up to 70 different reagents on board; UniCel DxC 600, designed for labs to hold up to 65 different reagents on board; AU680, designed for labs with the capacity to hold up to 63 different reagents on board, and AU480, for laboratories with the capacity to hold about 60 different reagents on board.

The Company’s Power Processor and AutoMate systems enable the laboratory to automate a number of pre-analytical steps, including sample log-in and sorting, through bar code technology, centrifugation, aliquoting and cap removal. These systems also sort the prepared samples into racks for further processing on its clinical chemistry, immunoassay and hematology systems. The post-analytical capability includes resorting for additional testing on other platforms or to a storage position. The Power Processor can be integrated with modules, track systems and analyzers to create laboratory automation that handles all of the laboratories pre-analytical and post analytical processes. The Automate 1200/2500 systems that the Company acquired from Olympus Corporation automate the pre- and post-analytical sample handling steps in laboratories.

The Company’s Immunoassay systems detect and quantify chemical substances of diagnostic interest in blood, urine or other body fluids. These systems use antibodies as the central components in their analytical reactions and have the ability to detect and quantify very low analyte concentrations. The commonly performed tests assess thyroid function; screen and monitor for cancer and cardiac risk and provide information in fertility and reproductive testing. Other tests are used to monitor factors associated with anemia, blood viruses and infectious disease. The Company offers over 60 immunoassay test kits. Its principal products in the Access family of immunoassay systems include Access Classic and Access 2, UniCel DxI 600 Access Immunoassay System and UniCel DxI 800 Access Immunoassay System. In addition, it offers more than 60 assays, targeted to a range of disease states, such as cancer, reproductive testing (Inhibin A).

Its hematology product line includes COULTER LH 750, 755, 780, and 1500 series of hematology systems. These systems offer features, such as five-part white blood cell differential analysis, enumeration of nucleated red blood cells, random-access capability and automated slide making and staining from a single aspiration of blood. The LH 780 system offers features to support anemia studies. The LH 1500 series of hematology automation systems are designed to link multiple analyzers. The COULTER DxH 800, provides a differentiated modular and scalable system for cellular testing. COULTER LH 500 Hematology Analyzer and other moderate volume hematology systems offer the technology features of larger systems in a compact bench top system. The Ac•T series hematology analyzers are for low volume office labs and smaller laboratories.

Our first step in flow cytometry traces back to the late 1970’s with the introduction of the EPICS series of flow cytometers, a 5 watt argon ion laser instruments. Since then we have been constantly improvising and introducing new features in our flow cytometers with increasing number of lasers and detectors, better analysis software, high speeds and extremely efficient instruments. Flow cytometry is used in a number of applications in basic research, clinical research, drug discovery and clinical diagnostics testing. Flow cytometers identify, categorize and characterize multiple types of cells in suspension. Its line of flow cytometry systems includes Gallios research analyzer, which is used for a range of research applications; Navios clinical analyzer used in a variety of clinical research applications, such as leukemia and lymphoma testing; CyAn ADP/Cell Lab Quanta analyzer, used in pharma and basic research; MoFlo XDP cell sorter is a cell sorter used to identify and individually select and sort cells of interest for further analysis, and Cytomics FC 500 series of flow cytometry systems and COULTER EPICS XL and XL-MCL flow cytometer series, which also are used in the clinical laboratory. The Company offers a wide range of reagents for above mentioned systems. Recently after acquisition of Olympus Beckman Coulter has solution for Single Cell PCR. Other products are Cell Viability analyzers – ViCell and particle colunter – Z Series and Multisizer.
